Evaluation of Your Clerkship Experience

Students’ performance on the rotation will be evaluated by both clinical observations and a written examination. Clinical observations will include feedback and evaluation by interns, residents, and attending physicians with whom the student works. For on-campus rotations, you will be evaluated in writing during a team conference using the standard clinical performance evaluation forms. The evaluation will be submitted at the end of each month to the clerkship director. Two weeks into each month of the rotation, students should receive feedback from the attending physician regarding performance to date, together with suggestions for improvement. The student must take responsibility for making an appointment with the attending physician for a feedback conference. All evaluations and comments will be reviewed by the clerkship director and also by the Department of Medicine Evaluation and Grading Committee as necessary before final clinical grades are determined. Student will also be evaluated by the National Board Subject Examination in Medicine.

Grading Scale

A: 90-100
B: 80-89.99
C: 70-79.99
D: 60-69.99
F: Below 59.99

Final grades are reported to the student by the Registrar’s Office. Students should not contact the Clerkship Director’s Office to obtain his or her final grade.

Grade Appeals

Students must submit to the clerkship director in writing the reasons for the appeal and provide objective documentation to support a change in a grade. Students may not approach an individual attending physician unless directed to do so by the clerkship director.

Written Examination

One written examination is given during the Medicine Clerkship. The National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) Medicine Subject Examination is given on the final day of the rotation (Friday morning). The NBME Subject Test Score achieved on this examination is converted to a percent scale (0-100%). This examination contributes 30% toward the student’s final grade.

Student Performance on the NBME Medicine Subject Examination is converted to a percentage score based on the scale below. These standards for MCG students are based on opinions provided by a national group of internal medicine clerkship directors. Their recommendations for scoring the NBME examination were as follows:

  • Minimum Passing Score: 60

  • Minimum Honors Score: 82

The MCG Standard is as follows:

  • Minimum Passing Score: 60

  • Minimum Honors Score: 82
