Clerkship Objectives

All clinical clerkships share some common objectives. You should be familiar with them.  The General Medical School Objectives are described in detail at: http://www.mcg.edu/som/coffice/CurricDescript/MCGMSOR.htm They state that physicians must be altruistic, knowledgeable, skillful and dutiful.

The School of Medicine has also adopted Competency-Based Objectives. They are based on the ACGME competency requirements which apply to all residency training programs. The MCG Competency-Based Objectives may be found at: http://www.mcg.edu/som/coffice/CurricDescript/MCGMSO.htm

They specifically describe competencies in 1) Patient Care, 2) Medical knowledge, 3) Practice- Based Learning and Improvement, 4) Interpersonal and Communication Skills, 5) Professionalism and 6) Systems-Based Practice.

The "common objectives" listed above are evaluated by faculty and residents when they fill in the standard MCG School of Medicine Evaluation and Grading Form.

In addition to the objectives listed above which are common to all specialties and clerkships, the Department of Surgery has adopted the following specific objectives for Surgery 5000. These are measurable. They are designed to help you accomplish the more general goals and objectives listed above. It is important to recognize that every patient presents multiple learning opportunities. Every patient presents problems to read about, to learn about and to think about.

Surgery 5000 Specific Objectives

All students will complete OR safety and sterile technique module on line prior to beginning their surgery rotation. (Documented through WebCT)

All students will see and evaluate multiple patients with multiple surgical problems in one or more of the designated specialties in General Surgery (inpatients and outpatients) and document their encounters on their One45 patient logs. General Surgery patients will be seen in:

GI Surgery                                                                                    Surgical Oncology                                                        Vascular/Transplant Surgery                                                         Pediatric Surgery

General Surgery-(this may include vascular, GI and oncology patients and is accomplished on the rotations at the VAMC, Atlanta Medical Center, Savannah Memorial Medical Center, the Thomasville Surgery Group Rotation, Phoebe Putney Hospital in Albany and Pediatric Surgery at the CMC.)

All students will see and evaluate patients with breast disease, hernia and vascular disease. (Students who do not see them on their own service will see them in another designated clinic and document this by having a card signed by a clinic attending which the student must give or fax to Grace Piaia Halstead, the Surgery Clerkship Coordinator.) All of these encounters should also be entered in the One45 patient logs.

All students will see patients with trauma and with abdominal pain. (All these encounters must be documented in the One45 patient logs.)

All students will see and evaluate multiple patients in two designated Surgical Subspecialties (documentation on One45 patient logs):

Otolaryngology                                                                               Orthopedics                                                                                    Plastic Surgery                                                                              Urology                                                                               Trauma/Critical Care                                                               Neurosurgery                                                                                Cardiothoracic Surgery

All students will pass the NBME Surgery Subject Exam (passing score to be set by the department)
