The Surgery Clerkship is an 8-week rotation consisting of one month on a Core General Surgical Service and two weeks each of two Subspecialty Surgical Services. The clerkship takes place in various locations throughout the state of Georgia. Clerkship sites include the Medical College of Georgia and Veterans Administration Hospital in Augusta, St. Joseph's Candler Hospital and Memorial Medical Center in Savannah, Atlanta Medical Center, Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany and Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville. At mid-year we will begin offering rotations at Crisp Regional Hospital in Cordele and West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange. The Core, General Surgical Services include GI Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Pediatric Surgery and Surgical Oncology at MCG Hospital, and General Surgery Services at the VA, Memorial Medical Center and St. Joseph Candler in Savannah, Atlanta Medical Center, Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville and Phoebe Putney Memorial in Albany. The Subspecialty Services are all in Augusta and include Plastic Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Trauma/Critical Care and Urology. This website is been designed to help the student understand the goals, objectives, and structure of the clerkship, the evaluation process, and administrative requirements for the rotation. The student curriculum guide outlines the attitudes, skills, and knowledge that students need to acquire during the clerkship. Students should use this material to help focus their learning efforts. An orientation session for all students will be held on the first day of the surgical rotation. Students will be notified by mail and email of the time and place. Please check the website, email or call the Student Coordinator to find out when and where this will take place. Please review the following information before you begin the rotation. We are available if you have questions or problems. The Department of Surgery is committed to making your rotation a positive educational experience. All of us in the Department of Surgery look forward to working with you and to helping you both during your rotation and in the future. |
