Evaluation and Grading

Cognitive This is evaluated through the NBME Subject Examination. This exam accounts for 30% of the student’s overall grade. MCG policy requires that students must pass the exam to pass the course.
Affective Student's performance is evaluated at the end of the rotation as part of their Clinical Performance Evaluation. The evaluation is done by a faculty member with input from the resident physicians rotating on the service. The total Clinical Performance Evaluation accounts for 64% (32%, core 16% each subspecialty) of the student’s overall grade.
Psychomotor Students may be questioned by the resident staff and surgical faculty before and during an operative procedure assess their level of understanding and to give them an opportunity to demonstrate their mastery in this area. A global assessment of the students performance in this area is done at the end of the rotation as part of the Clinical Performance Evaluation.

A student performing a procedure does so under the supervision of a resident or attending physician. Proficiency of a psychomotor skill is attained when the procedure is performed to the satisfaction of the supervising physician. A global assessment of the student’s psychomotor skill is done at the end of the rotation as part of the Clinical Performance Evaluation.

Grades will be forwarded to the Dean's office as soon as possible. The Coordinator will send you your exam score by mail as soon as it is available. No other information will be given out before the grades are sent to the Registrar.

  1. Performance Evaluation: Your performance grade will be based on your activities in clinics, wards, operating room, etc. Input will be from housestaff and faculty. This evaluation will be completed using the standardized clinical performance evaluation. The faculty member will assign a numerical grade that will be used to calculate the final grade for the rotation. Note that the faculty member signing your grading sheet may not be someone you worked with. The comments are gathered from multiple residents and faculty and are compiled and signed by the section faculty member assigned that responsibility.
  2. Written Examination: The final written examination will be given to all students at 9:00 a.m. in the CMC conference room. Students will be notified of location changes.

GRADING

The final grade will be calculated as follows:

Core general surgery performance  32% (=0.32 x grade)

First subspecialty                          16% (=0.16 x grade)

Second subspecialty                      16% (=0.16 x grade)

NBME corrected exam score           30% (=0.30 x score)

"Professionalism"                             6 points

*The points for "Professionalism" will be given as follows;

         Timely completion of One45 patient log = 2

         Timely submission of mid rotation evaluation = 1

         Completion of four required WiseMD cases = 1

          Timely submission of Off Service Clinical Experience Documentation = 1

          Lecture attendance (>80%) = 1

The final letter grade will be based on the usual MCG scale:

   A =  90-100%

   B=   80-89.99%

   C=   70-70.99%

    D=  60-69.99%

     F.  <60%

Off Service Clinical Experiences

Because of the specialized nature of current surgical practice, not all types of general surgical problems are seen on each service. In addition to the variety of patients seen on night/weekend trauma and emergency call, we want all students to at least have seen and examined patients with a variety of general surgical problems including hernias, breast disease and peripheral vascular disease. To accomplish this, students on each core general surgery service will attend clinics of other core specialties as listed below. Other arrangements will be made for off campus students.

In order to document the experience, each student will have cards which are to be signed by attending surgeon or senior resident in the clinic. It is the student's responsibility to attend the appropriate clinic (details will be given at orientation), to have the card signed and to return or fax the card to Grace Piaia by the Friday of the third week of the rotation.

Students on:                  Will attend clinic(s):

GI Surgery                       MCG Surgical Oncology

Vascular Surgery              MCG Surgical Oncology, VAMC General Surgery

Surgical Oncology             VAMC Vascular and General Surgery

Pediatric Surgery               MCG Surgical Oncology, VAMC Vascular

VAMC Gen Surg                MCG Surgical Oncology

Mid-Rotation and Subspecialty Evaluations

Students on four week general surgery core rotations are required to get mid-rotation evaluations completed at the end of the second week. Forms will be provided (see below). It is the student's responsibility 1) to have the attending or senior resident complete this form and 2) to deliver or fax a copy of the form to Grace Piaia by the Wednesday of the third week of the rotation.

A "short form" grading sheet will be used for documenting grades and comments on the two week subspecialty rotations. It will be student's responsibility to ascertain from the subspecialty attending whether grading will be done directly on the card (in which case the student must return it to Grace Piaia ) or if the grade will be sent in by the section or department.
