Student Assignments

Efforts will be made to honor original student assignments. However, some assignments may be changed due to disparities between faculty/student ratios at the various sites. Additionally, due to unforeseen situations (e.g., faculty resignation, student withdrawal) it will occasionally be necessary to reassign students during the course of the academic year. If the assignment to a particular site creates a substantial personal hardship, you should contact the Director. The Director will make every effort to diminish the hardship, including re-assigning the student to a different site. Otherwise, no changes in site assignments will be made during the course of the year.

Call Schedule

Students on the Core Surgery Rotation are on call on four or five times during the four weeks in General Surgery.  Students on the Surgery Subspecialty Rotation are not required to take in house call although they may elect to make themselves available during the evening hours to see emergency consultations or participate in operative cases.   Students are not to take call on the two nights before the examination.

At 6:00 PM on weekdays and at 8:00 am on weekend days students on call should page the residents that are on call and report. Students on Emergency call should stay and "shadow" the third year general surgery resident on call.  (Students should have the Trauma or Emergency Call Beepers when they are on call. If there is a trauma page, they should go directly to the Emergency Department Trauma Area.)

Lists of the residents on call are ordinarily posted in the service offices. If there is any question as to what resident to call, the names and pager numbers may be found by going to the MCGHI home webpage. Click on MCGHI on Call, Surgery (night call)- click the appropriate time-and page the resident listed as Emergency Surgery or Trauma. If there is any problem contacting the resident, page the Chief Resident.

Students on call are expected to stay in the hospital during the nights they are on call.  Call rooms are located in Pavilion I. The keypad code for entrance to the call room will be given to you at orientation.

If a student is sick and unable to take call it is his/her responsibility to contact the resident or chief resident-and also let the clerkship coordinator and clerkship director know by email that they are unable to take call and why.

Night call is an important part of this rotation. It is your responsibility to be present and available, to make your availability known and to participate as much as possible in whatever is happening on the call service.

If there is any questions about this policy, contact Dr. Nesbit directly. Please feel free to contact the clerkship coordinator if you have any further questions.

Duty Hours

Students are not expected to be on duty more than 30 consecutive hours or more than 80 hours a week. Students should not come in to make morning rounds prior to 5:00 a.m. They are required to leave the hospital (unless they choose to sleep here for a while) after 30 hours on duty. The only exceptions to this policy will be if for some special reason the student wants to remain beyond the 30 hours (e.g., had enough sleep while on call, particularly wants to stay to see a procedure, etc.) This may only be done with the special permission of the attending surgeon-and when it does occur, Dr. Nesbit must be notified by email (including the reason for staying) before the student leaves for the day.

Holidays and Weekends

The Department of Surgery recognizes three students holidays: Christmas, Thanksgiving and Spring Holiday. Please arrange your call schedule so that a student is on call until 7:00 a.m. on the date listed as beginning your holiday. You will be excused the last weekend of both the Core Surgery and Surgery Subspecialty Rotation. See the Standard Policies and Procedures for the Core Clerkships.

Operating Room Conduct

All students must successfully complete the on-line training and OR Safety Program before their initial entrance to the Operating Room. This may be found at the following link.

http://www.apreso.mcg.edu/Hub/NEWHUB/Kotti/OR_BasicsForObservers.htm

Going to the Operating Room is one of the unique aspects of Surgery 5000 and represents a significant educational experience for students. You should prepare for each case by reviewing available patient information and reading about the disease process and operative procedures. You should arrive in the OR prior to the induction of anesthesia. The are a number of roles played by different personnel in the OR, and it is generally a confusing place until you grow accustomed to the environment. No one, including your attending, understood all of the procedures and protocols in the OR when they first started. It is better to ask others what you should be doing than to act when you are uncertain. Many students do not take advantage of the many hours that they spend with the housestaff and faculty in the OR. It is certainly reasonable to ask questions during the case but you should be sensitive about timing. There are parts of complex procedures that will require the housestaff and attending physician complete attention. It would be prudent to always ask "Is this a good time to ask a question?" before doing so during an operative procedure.

Scrubs are provided for your use in the OR and to wear in the evening when you are on call. If you have difficulty getting scrubs from the MCG OR machine, ask for help. Do not under any circumstances use force to get into the machine. Scrubs should not be worn outside of the OR unless you expect to return to the OR later that same day. If you leave the OR in scrubs, you should remove your hats and shoe covers. Scrubs may not be worn outside of the hospital. These policies are designed to protect patients, health care providers, and others from Blood Borne Diseases. Soiled scrubs should be returned to the laundry hamper in the OR.  Please make sure that all scrubs are turned in at the end of the surgery rotation.
