The Psychiatry Clerkship is a six-week curriculum designed to help students develop clinical skills and a knowledge base in Psychiatry. The clerkship includes Inpatient, Outpatient, C-L Substance Abuse and off-campus experiences as well as case presentations, journal club meetings, case conferences, and Grand Rounds.

By the end of the clerkship, students should demonstrate the following:

  1. Ability to perform a comprehensive history and physical examination (when appropriate). This includes performance of a mini-mental status examination.
     
  2. Working knowledge of major psychiatric diagnoses on Axis I, II, III, IV, V of DSMIV and the ability to present a reasoned differential diagnosis.
     
  3. Ability to develop a comprehensive treatment plan. This includes an awareness of the biopsychosocial model and an understanding of different therapeutic modalities.
     
  4. Knowledge of psychopharmalogic agents, including indications and significant adverse effects.
     
  5. Understanding of and basic competence in identifying psychiatric emergencies and how they should be handled.
     
  6. Ability to write clear and thorough psychiatric reports, consult notes and progress notes.
     
  7. Demonstrate appropriate professional demeanor, ethics and respect for patient confidentiality.
