CLERKSHIP GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

 

SOM SKILL: Deliver Preventive Care for Women

GOAL 1: Practice Preventive Care for Women in an Ambulatory Setting in Obstetrics and Gynecology

 

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Perform breast and pelvic examinations in clinical settings

  2. Collect gynecologic specimens in clinical settings

  3. Diagnose pregnancy

  4. Document comprehensive histories including female specific and sexual histories           5. Synthesize a problem list with appropriate differential diagnoses

  6. Establish the connection between tests and physical findings with the

      likelihood of a particular diagnosis

  7. Identify and implement age appropriate or gestational age appropriate

      screening procedures

 

SOM SKILL: Attain Core Knowledge

GOAL 2: Acquire the Core Body of Knowledge for the Care of Women in the Practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology

 

OBJECTIVES:

  • Demonstrate core clerkship general knowledge
  • Obtain up-to-date information through reading textbooks and current literature
  • Attend or watch lectures given by preceptors

 

SOM SKILL: Improve Communication and Counseling

GOAL 3: Improve Clinical Communication skills in Women’s Health Care Settings

 

OBJECTIVES:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in basic counseling regarding common health concerns in women
  • Perform basic counseling on issues such as: contraception choices, prevention of STI, smoking cessation, advanced maternal age, exercise and nutrition in pregnancy, immunizations as well as common pregnancy concerns
  • Access patient education tools that enhance patient understanding

 

 

 SOM SKILL: Practice Risk Assessment

GOAL 4: Practice Risk Assessment in Women

 

OBJECTIVES:

  • Use screening tests to identify women at risk for depression, abuse or sexual dysfunction
  • Describe interventions in situations as severe depression and domestic violence

 

SOM SKILL: Practice Ethics

GOAL 5: Appreciate Legal & Ethical Issues in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health

             

OBJECTIVES:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic informed consent
  • Use the principles of clinical ethics to deal with issues such as Informed refusal
  • Recognize ethical dilemmas in Women’s Health
  • Recognize the potential impact of personal bias

 

SOM SKILL: Practice Clinical Obstetrics

GOAL 6: Participate in Obstetric Care

 

OBJECTIVES:

  • Participate in ambulatory and in-patient prenatal care
  • Care for patients on labor and delivery
  • Perform at least two vaginal deliveries
  • Assist in management of common conditions during the postpartum period
  • Spend the second stage of labor with at least 2 patients
  • Demonstrate an understanding for the variations in labor
  • Perform basic preconception, lactation, and contraception counseling

 

SOM SKILL: Inpatient Care and Surgery

GOAL 7: Participate in Inpatient Care, and Gynecologic and Obstetric Procedures

 

OBJECTIVES:

  • Participate in treatment of problems commonly seen in general obstetrics and gynecology
  • Participate in inpatient and outpatient procedures
  • Participate In the care of hospitalized women
  • Participate In preoperative, surgical, labor and delivery as well as post- procedure care
