Clerkship Objectives

GOAL I:   PRACTICE PREVENTIVE CARE AND HEALTH MANAGEMENT IN AN AMBULATORY SETTING

Objectives include

1.      Perform breast and pelvic examinations

2.      Collect gynecologic specimens

3.      Diagnose pregnancy

4.      Document comprehensive histories including female specific and sexual histories  

5.      Synthesize a problem list with appropriate differential diagnoses

6.      Establish the connection between tests  and physical findings with the likelihood of a particular diagnosis

7.      Demonstrate  “painless pelvic” technique

8.      Demonstrate  best practice techniques for obtaining gynecologic specimens

9.       Identify and implement age appropriate or gestational age appropriate screening procedures
 

GOAL II: ACQUIRE THE CORE BODY OF KNOWLEDGE CONSIDERED APPROPRIATE FOR THE CLERKSHIP IN OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY

Objectives include

1.      Demonstrate core clerkship general knowledge

2.      Identify areas of special focus

3.      Demonstrate knowledge and skills associated with four areas of special focus:

  • Abnormal PAP smear results

  • Postmenopausal bleeding 

  • Risk for ectopic pregnancy

  • Breast mass/abnormal mammogram
     

GOAL III: IMPROVE CLINICAL COMMUNICATION   SKILLS

Objectives include

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in basic counseling regarding common  health concerns in women
     
  2. Perform basic counseling on issues such as:  contraception choices, prevention of STI, smoking cessation, advanced maternal age, exercise and nutrition in pregnancy, immunizations as well as common pregnancy concerns
     
  3. Access patient education  tools that enhance patient understanding

 

GOAL IV: PRACTICE RISK ASSESSMENT IN WOMEN

Objectives include

  1. Use  screening tests to identify women at risk for depression, abuse or sexual dysfunction
     
  2. Describe interventions in situations as severe depression and domestic violence
     

GOAL V:  APPRECIATE LEGAL & ETHICAL ISSUES IN OBSTETRICS, GYNECOLOGY AND WOMEN’S HEALTH

Objectives include

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of basic informed consent
     
  2. Use the principles of clinical ethics to deal with issues such as informed refusal
     
  3. Recognize ethical dilemmas in Women’s Health
     
  4. Recognize  the potential impact of personal bias 

 

GOAL VI: PARTICIPATE IN OBSTETRIC CARE

Objectives include

Quantifying participation in a procedure log:

1.      Ambulatory and In-patient prenatal care

2.      Care for patients on labor and delivery

3.      Attend at least one vaginal delivery

4.      Manage of common conditions during  the postpartum period

Providing documentary evidence

5.      Spend the  second stage of labor with at least 2 patients

6.      Demonstrate an understanding for the variations in labor

7.      Perform  basic lactation counseling

Assessing knowledge skills attitudes and behaviors through Clinical Evaluation tool

 

GOAL VII: PARTICIPATE IN INPATIENT CARE   AND GYNECOLOGIC AND OBSTETRIC PROCEDURES

Objectives include

Quantifying participation in a procedure log:

1.      Treatment of problems commonly seen in general obstetrics and gynecology

2.      Participate in inpatient and outpatient procedures

3.      Participate In the care of hospitalized women

4.      Participate In preoperative, surgical and post procedure care

Demonstrating knowledge skills attitudes and behaviors which are assessed through Clinical Evaluation tool
