Evaluation
- You will be given an opportunity to evaluate in writing our
attending staff and your house officers in addition to an overall evaluation of the rotation. I will be happy to see you at any time to discuss problems or concerns. Every attempt to protect your anonymity will be made. We consider all student input and find student evaluations very important in improving our program. At the end of the academic year, a pooled, anonymous summary of student evaluations will be sent to each faculty member and house officer.
- Determination of your final grade will be is follows:
- Written examination (25%
of final grade). Students who fail to
receive at least a grade of 58 on this examination will have to remediate.
Please see remediation guidelines for details.
- Direct evaluation by the attending and house staff concerning performance on the ward/clinic.
65% of the final grade will be determined by the attending staff.
- Student should meet with the attending at both the end of the second and the
end of the third week of the rotation for review of Patient Encounter logs.
Patient Encounters represent 5% of the final
grade. Over the course of the rotation you must log 20 patient
encounters. You must have 20 patient encounters logged
before taking the exam in order to get your 5%. Assigned Clinic Attendings are marked on the clinic rotation schedule by an
(*).
- Grading Scale for Clinical Performance is as follows:
- 90–100: Outstanding performance in all areas. Under normal circumstances no more than 20%
of students will perform at this level.
- 80–89.9: Meeting expectations: Clinical skills are solid, and appropriate for his/her level of
training. The majority of students will perform at this level.
- 70–79.9: Compared with peers, this student demonstrates clinical skills that are below
expectations for his/her level of training.
- < 70: This student has significant clinical performance deficiencies, and should not pass the
rotation.
-
5%
of the final grade will be credited
with completion of all lectures.
Failure to complete all lectures will result in no
credit.
- Grade Appeal: Once a final grade is posted, students have four weeks to appeal their grade in a course or clerkship if they think their evaluation is unjust by:
Step 1: Discuss a Concern
The student must discuss the concern with the module or clerkship director first and not with any other faculty member (e.g., the student's attending physician) who taught in module or clerkship. A violation of this step will result in a student forfeiting the right to officially appeal the grade.
Step 2: Appeal a Grade
To appeal a grade, a student must submit to the module or clerkship director in writing the reasons for the appeal and provide objective documentation to support a change in a grade. The module or clerkship director reviews the students' appeal either independently or through a committee. The module or clerkship director notifies the student in writing (may be electronic) of the decision.
The student may appeal the decision of the module or clerkship director to the department chair. If several departments comprise the module, the student may appeal the decision to the associate dean for curriculum. If a student does not agree with the decision of the department chair or associate dean for curriculum the student may appeal the decision to the dean.
Approved by the COC-11.12.09
