Tips from the
Statewide AHEC Network for a Successful Clinical Rotation
The following tips have been compiled from suggestions by former students and
preceptors. We hope they will assist you in having the best rotation possible.
We know that you are serving as your schools’ ambassador to the community and
want to help you succeed in that role.
-
Wear professional attire, short white jacket,
name tag and closed toe shoes (OSHA).
-
Conduct a professional entrance interview with
your preceptor regarding
-
your learning needs (suggested Clinical
Competencies Inventory tool helps)
-
your program’s policies and procedures
-
your preceptors’ policies and procedures
-
Always introduce yourself as a student from MCG
-
If there is a conflict or question about
anything, talk with your preceptor first, and then call the school if
problems continue:
- Lack of proper supervision
- Policy or procedure conflicts
- Ethical dilemmas
- Teaching style/communication issues
- Changes in assignment (school-site agreements
must be signed)
-
Never argue with or contradict a preceptor or
staff member in front of a patient
-
When absent, always inform the site, school and
AHEC
-
When asked to do a future rotation, make sure
the school and AHEC are involved to insure that future students are not
“bumped” from rotations
-
Bring a cell phone. Place no long distance calls
from a preceptor office
-
Conduct a professional departure on your last
day of rotation:
-
Housing behavior (be a considerate guest):
-
Conduct yourself in a professional manner at
all times
-
Keep and leave the housing as clean as you
found it
-
Be aware of other students’ needs for quiet,
support & low allergy environments
-
Clear out perishable food
-
Wash, dry and fold sheets on bed for next
student
-
Take out garbage
-
Clean the bathroom and kitchen
-
Later, inform AHEC and school of any changes
mailing address, email, and phone
-
Make every effort to make a good impression of
yourself, school and preceptor.
-
Take advantage of every educational opportunity
which presents itself
-
Be an ambassador of good will for your school
and the AHEC
If you have any questions or concerns about your rotation or accommodations,
please call your AHEC for assistance.
