Dear Student,

Welcome to the Magnolia Coastlands Area Health Education Center (MCAHEC) region. Our goal is to help you gain fulfilling educational experiences by providing community-based learning opportunities and clinical experiences within the rural and urban underserved communities of southeast Georgia. Community-based training will give you a unique opportunity to experience health care in a real world setting and interact one-on-one with your future patient population in community health centers, county health departments, local practitioner’s offices and many other community primary care sites. Current research has shown that health care professions students who have participated in these experiences have a better understanding of the complex needs of underserved communities.

We are pleased to be able to offer benefits to students training within the 39 counties we serve. In order to receive any of the benefits listed below, you must complete and return the AHEC student support form.  Please contact our office or your Clinical Coordinator to receive a form.

Student Housing:  available on a first come, first served basis

  • MCAHEC apartments are located in Savannah and Waycross
  • Community partners provide additional housing for students in Baldwin, Chatham, Glynn, Jefferson, Johnson, and Laurens Counties.
  • If you should need housing elsewhere within our region please do not hesitate to contact us for assistance.

Travel Assistance:

  • Students who are not receiving AHEC housing support are eligible to receive a travel stipend to assist with expenses incurred when traveling to clinical sites.

OVID Access:

  • OVID is an online collection of scholarly databases ie:  MEDLINE, Evidence Based Medicine (EBM), PsycINFO and many others.
  • Full text journal articles are available for more than 200 medical journals
  • Students must contact our office to be granted access.

On behalf of the Magnolia Coastlands AHEC staff, welcome and we hope you enjoy your time spent in southeast Georgia!  We look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,
