Dear Student,

Welcome to the Foothills Area Health Education Center (AHEC) region. My goal as the Preceptor Coordinator for this area is to help you gain fulfilling educational experiences by providing community-based learning opportunities and clinical experiences within the rural and urban underserved communities of northeast Georgia. Community-based training will give you a unique opportunity to experience health care in a real world setting and interact one-on-one with your future patient population in community health centers, county health departments, local practitioner’s offices and many other community primary care sites. Current research has shown that health care professions students who have participated in these experiences have a better understanding of the complex needs of underserved communities.

We are pleased to be able to offer benefits to students training within the 31 counties we serve. In order to receive any of the benefits listed below, you must complete and return the AHEC student support form. Please contact our office or your Clinical Coordinator to receive a form.

·Student Housing: available on a first come, first served basis
     - AHEC apartments are located in Athens & Gainesville
-Community partners provide additional housing for
students in Greene, Habersham and Stephens counties.
-If you should need housing elsewhere within our region
please do not hesitate to contact us for assistance.

 ·Travel Assistance:
-Students who are not receiving housing support are eligible
to receive a $50 travel stipend to assist with expenses
incurred when traveling to clinical sites located outside of
      their educational institution’s county.

·OVID Access:
-OVID is an online collection of scholarly databases
      including MEDLINE, CINAHL, and HealthSTAR.
-Full text journal articles are available from more than 46
medical journals and 14 nursing journals.
-Students must contact our office to be granted access.

On behalf of the Foothills AHEC staff, welcome and we hope you enjoy your time spent in northeast Georgia! We look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,
Whitney Willis
