What to Bring:
Both houses and apartment are fully furnished, but if you would like to bring your own bed
linen for a twin size bed, please do. Students must supply all personal items
including personal hygiene materials, towels, food, etc. Basic kitchen utensils, a microwave, and dishes are supplied. Meals are
not provided. A television is located in
the common area. Basic
cable is not provided, but you are welcomed to bring your own TV with antennae
for your room. Phone cards must be used for
long distance calls. Kitchens and bathrooms will be shared by the other
student(s) in the apartment. Only same sex students will be in each bedroom,
unless a married couple is completing clerkship/clinical rotation together.
Check In and Check Out: If you have picked up your keys over the weekend
you must check in with Blue Ridge AHEC at 8:30 AM the following business day
prior to beginning your rotation. You
will receive hospital orientation and sign the housing agreement. At the end of your rotation,
please return the key to the Blue Ridge AHEC office before noon on the day you depart.
Office hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. A $25 fee will be charged for lost keys, and your grades will be held
until they are returned.
Floyd Medical Center: All students completing a rotation affiliated
with Floyd Medical Center will receive a one hour orientation on the first day
of your rotation. Please complete all forms and obtain an ID badge at the
hospital prior to seeing your preceptor.
Mail and Email: Mail may be sent to Blue Ridge AHEC, P.O. Box 5486, Rome, GA, 30162-5486. You
may retrieve your e-mail and send messages from computers at Blue Ridge AHEC,
Floyd Medical Center Library, Sara Hightower Regional Library and Coosa Valley
Technical College Library. Searches may be done from the computers as well.
Please be courteous of other students' needs for the computers and be sure to
use the computer jacks for your laptops. Do not use regular phone lines as they
may damage your computer. If you need any assistance, Misty Drake or another
staff member will assist you.
Parking: Park in the rear of Blue Ridge AHEC in the gravel parking area. Other
parking is designated for the staff.
Washer and Dryer: A free washer and dryer are available in the main building. Please bring your own supplies.
Maintenance Problems:
During regular office hours please contact the Blue Ridge AHEC office. After
hours, for EMERGENCIES only (i.e., water leak or burst pipe) please contact the
Preceptor Coordinator. The emergency contact information for the Preceptor
Coordinator is posted on the refrigerator at each house/apartment.
Emergencies:
Rome is a 911 area
for fire, police and ambulance. Please use the phone book for information for any other
non-emergency assistance.
Cleaning:
Students are required to keep houses and apartments clean during residence and upon
departure. A housekeeper comes
monthly for light cleaning only. Please
be careful of spills. If an apartment is
left in an unsatisfactory manner, a cleaning/ replacement fee will be charged. Please do not take any items that belong to the apartment.
Theft will result in a fine. When
you leave, please turn off all lights and put the air conditioner on "power
save."
Restrictions:
No smoking is allowed in the apartments. No
pets are allowed. The houses and apartments are a drug-free
environment and your signature on the agreement ensures your acknowledgement and
agreement to this restriction. Please use common courtesy. Do not have loud
conversations or music in the houses and apartment or in the parking lot. Make sure that
you do not inconvenience your roommates as well. Be friendly and considerate of
your neighbors.
Meals:
All medical, NP and PA students
may eat a free lunch in the doctors'
dining rooms at Floyd Medical Center. Wear your white coat and hospital
ID badge. If you chose to eat in
the public dining rooms, you will pay the public fees for your food. MCG
Family Practice medical students only are given meal tickets for free meals
to use at anytime in the public dining rooms. These tickets are paid for by the
Family Practice Program and are not intended for other students of any
kind.
Exercise:
Floyd Medical Center (FMC)-All students with a Floyd Medical Center badge may exercise at FMC's rehab
gym free of charge. This facility is
located at 304 Shorter Avenue in the lower level of the Urgent Care building.Park in the back and go in the lower level. This center has weight
equipment, stationery bikes, and treadmills. The hours for students and
employees are 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM. All
rehab center employees and equipment must be kept available for patients during
normal business hours. Take your Floyd
Medical Center badge.
Vitality Center: The Vitality Center
is an affiliate of the Harbin Clinic and is housed in the back lower level of
the Southeastern Cardiovascular Institute. This building is the large structure
located at 504 Redmond Road across from Redmond Regional Medical Center. Students are allowed the opportunity to use this facility while completing
rotations in the Rome area.

You must first call Toris Redding, Membership Coordinator at (706) 290-2334
to arrange to complete a health history and sign a waiver. Bring your
student ID badge when you visit.
This center
has the latest Cybex equipment, treadmills, recumbent bikes, elliptical
trainers, and spin, aerobic, kickboxing and yoga classes. All center employees
are exercise physiologists or certified instructors who are available to you
when not attending to patients.
Berry College:
Located about three miles North of Floyd Medical Center on Martha Berry
Boulevard (Hwy 27 North), this 28,000 acre campus has much to offer. Bring your mountain bike, kayak, or running shoes. You will find single and double track bike trails, inline skating,
running trails, gym and pool. You must call the CE department at Berry (706-236-2270) to
sign up for the pool and gym. There is a
$45 fee and waiver for the use of these two services. The hours there are 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM Monday through Friday. Ask Gail at the CE department about Saturday and Sunday hours and
specific free swim hours.
