Rotation Information: Southwestern State Hospital, Thomasville, GA, is a 240 bed public hospital
serving 24 counties in southwest Georgia. Patients include those with mental
illnesses, addictive diseases, and mental retardation. The average length
of stay for psychiatric patients is approximately 10 days.
Medical students' primary assignment will be to the acute psychiatric service,
with rotation through several treatment teams. Emphasis will be placed on
diagnosis and stabilization of psychiatric problems commonly encountered in
primary care and emergency settings. Optional rotations in substance abuse and
mental retardation are available.
