Central State Hospital (CSH) is Georgia's largest facility for persons with mental illness and developmental disabilities. The scope of services is extensive and includes: short-stay acute treatment for consumer with mental illness; residential units and habilitation programs for individuals with developmental disabilities; recovery programs for consumers requiring longer stays; and specialized skilled and ICG nursing centers. Some of the programs serve primarily central Georgia region while other programs serve many counties throughout the state of Georgia.
Students will be given the opportunity to work on all units at CSH. The Central State Hospital staff is comprised of a highly trained and competent 41-member physician team with specialties in Psychiatry, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Dentistry, Anesthesiology, Pediatrics, and Radiology. The medical staff also incorporates doctoral level psychologists, clinical nurse specialist and nurse practitioners.
While at CSH, there are numerous safety measures in place. First and
foremost, students are never alone with patients who are deemed
dangerous or unpredictable. On the more chronic units, where patients
have been stable for years, students have the opportunity to interview
and counsel patients. Students are sometimes "alone" with these
patients, but the door is always open and there is always a large male
staff member within arms reach of the patient. While on the more
acute units, where patients are not confined within rooms, students
are always escorted by a physician or other staff member. There are
always numerous staff members interspersed throughout the patients
should anything unpredictable happen. This site comes highly recommended for students that are looking for a great clinical experience in psychiatry.
Students are given access to an office while on rotation at CSH during and after hours. There are also computers on the units for your use. The Medical Library on the CSH campus is available for student use.
Lunch is served daily in the CSH cafeteria and is available for students to purchase for a very minimal cost.
