Backus Children’s Hospital @MHUMC, Savannah, GA

 

Rotation Information:  Magnolia Coastlands Area Health Education Center welcomes you to Savannah, GA for your Pediatric rotation at the Memorial Health University Medical Center.  You will be spending your rotation with various attending physicians and residents. 

 

Please contact the Magnolia Coastlands AHEC as soon as possible if housing is needed for this rotation.  Housing is provided on a first come, first serve basis.

NOTE:  You will be expected to report to your rotation site on Tuesday morning, please report to the Backus Children’s Hospital Outpatient Clinic, Pediatric Conference Room for orientation at 9:00 AM, report to Dr. Natalie Hogan (Melissa Goodman, Coordinator).

 

All students are provided with computer access at Memorial Health University Medical Center.  In order to obtain the computer access students must complete the confidentiality form below prior to arriving for your rotation in Savannah.  A social security number must also be provided.

You will be given a pager, Harriet Lane Handbook and a Manual of Clinical Problems in Pediatrics.  The pager is to be kept with you, turned on during the day, every weekday and turned off after 5:00 PM, if you are not on call.  Replacement batteries are available in the Ambulatory Pediatric Administrative Office.

 

The clerkship is divided into two three week sessions:  Ambulatory and Inpatient (Ward).  You are to be on time for lectures, clinic/ward assignments and your MCG exam.  You will give an oral presentation during your rotation and are expected to give two write ups to Melissa Goodman before you leave.

 

The copier on the third floor is located in the Nurses’ Station.  Rounder sheets, short journal articles, ect. Are appropriate, but bulk copying should be done at the Backus Children’s Hospital Outpatient Clinic in the administrative department or in the Doctors’ Lounge.  Limit your use of copiers to hospital business, please.

 

When writing on charts, please specify “JMS” after your name.  If your signature is not legible, please print your name under your signature.

You will be evaluated by Attending Physicians, Residents and the Student Clerkship Coordinator.  Please follow your orientation instructions to ensure a smooth and accurate evaluation.  Dr. Hogan will conduct an “Exit Interview” that YOU call to schedule with Ms. Goodman (350-7847).  Grades may be withheld if pagers, books and videotapes are not returned to Ms. Goodman.  You will be held responsible for lost books ($45/each) and pager ($150).

 

Please bring your own scrubs as this facility does not provide them for medical students.

 

Directions to Memorial/Savannah from Augusta:  Take US HWY 25/Peach Orchard Road South.  Travel through Waynesboro and Millen and continue toward Statesboro.  At the 301 Bypass outside of Statesboro, turn Right and follow it to I-16.  Take I-16 East to Savannah (about 45 minutes).  Pass the I-95 interchange and go approximately four miles.  Take the first 516 Exit.  This road becomes Derene Avenue.  Pass Abercorn, Habersham, Reynolds, and Paulson intersections.  The next large intersection is Waters Avenue.  Turn Left onto Waters Avenue and go one block about ½ mile.  Memorial will be on the right.  Parking is available in the visitor lot.

 

Savannah Housing Information

 

Hospital Check Out:  Please check out with Melissa Goodman on the last day of your rotation.  Grades may be held until all keys and borrowed items are returned.  Remember to have scheduled your own exit interview with Dr. Hogan.
