Welcome to Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia

Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. Since my arrival in 2002, I have been most impressed with the work ethic and high caliber of our residents. A friendly, warm and team-oriented spirit is found throughout our residency. Our hospitals include representation from all the surgical subspecialties, which allows our residents a broad education and excellent experience in a wide variety of general and regional anesthetic techniques.

Our department was established under the leadership and vision of Dr. Perry Volpitto in 1937. He established our residency program at the Medical College of Georgia, the first in the Southeast, at a time when there were only four major postgraduate training programs for anesthesiology in the country. The department continued to grow under Drs. Zack Gramling and Robert Crumrine. I am very proud to continue this vision and spirit of leadership in anesthesiology as we move toward the next generation of advancements in anesthesiology.

Our research laboratory conducts high-level research such as in vivo video microscopy, new drug development, and nanomedicine. Personally, I have continued my bench and clinical research work with inhaled nitric oxide and sickle cell disease, for which I hold two patents. In addition, we have recruited additional colleagues from Harvard, Duke and Boston University who have helped us to strengthen our scientific endeavors.

We offer solid research, education and clinical training here at MCG. You have my firm commitment that I will work with you. Come be a part of our team and grow with us as we explore new and exciting areas of anesthesiology in the 21st century!
