About Augusta, Georgia
Dr. C. Alvin HeadWelcome to the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.  Since my arrival to this Department on August 1, 2002, I have been most impressed with the work ethic and high caliber of our residents.  A friendly, warm and team-oriented spirit is found throughout our residency.  We are in the midst of growth and strengthening of our academic program. This will add to our rich tradition of clinical excellence for which this program was founded.

In fact, the Medical College of Georgia’s Department of Anesthesiology was one of the first anesthesia residency programs in the country, and the first academic program in the Southeast.  Under the leadership and vision of Dr. Perry Volpitto, the department was established in 1937 in Augusta Georgia at the University of Georgia’s School of Medicine. This department was developed when there were only 400 full time anesthesiologists in the U. S., and was one of only four major training programs for post graduate training in anesthesiology. The department continued to grow under the direction of Dr. Zack Gramling and Dr. Robert Crumrine.  I am very proud to continue this vision and spirit of leadership in Anesthesiology for our department, as we move forward through the next generation of Anesthesiology advancement.

New developments include a Departmental Research Laboratory which will conduct high-level research endeavors, such as molecular biology, in-vivo video-microscopy, and patient simulation studies.  We will be a highly competitive academic program, and will soon be very competitive with other top rated programs in the country.  Personally, I will continue my bench and clinical research work with inhaled nitric oxide and sickle cell disease, for which I have obtained two patents.  In addition, we have recruited three additional colleagues from Harvard, who will help us strengthen our scientific endeavors and our clinical research studies.  All are excellent additions to our program.

We offer solid Research, Education, and Clinical training here at MCG.  You have my firm commitment that I will work with you.  Come be part of our team and grow with us as we explore new and exciting areas of Anesthesiology in the twenty-first century!
