First year medical students

Dean’s Message

Thank you for your interest in the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine.

As dean of the nation’s 13th-oldest medical school, established in 1828, it’s been an honor and privilege to be here since July 1, 2006.

The school’s potential is limitless. The last decade has yielded phenomenal strategic growth in educational, research and clinical initiatives in disease categories affecting every family in Georgia and the United States: cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes/ obesity, infection/inflammation and neurological disease.

Our growth is validated by robust research funding and clinical activity, as well as a re-chiseling of the face of MCG, Georgia’s health sciences university.

While we have grown remarkably over the past decade, we have not lost sight of our primary mission, medical education. I firmly believe that the raison d’etre of a school of medicine is not simply to provide health care or conduct research. It is to provide students, residents, researchers and physicians with a better understanding of the art and science of medicine.

We also celebrate diversity in our student body, in ensuring our graduates reflect the many faces of the growing U.S. population.

In the final analysis, the MCG School of Medicine must prepare its graduates to provide patient-focused health care for an increasingly aged and chronically sicker population.

As our class size, already one of the largest in the country, increases, the MCG School of Medicine welcomes an applicant pool of students who will lead us all into the next era of medical education and health care delivery.
