General Information

The physician occupies a vital and honored position in today’s increasingly sophisticated and complex society. Opportunities for employment include clinical practice, teaching and research. Successful completion of the requirements of the School of Medicine leads to the M.D. degree and a career dedicated to maintaining health and alleviating and curing disease.

The Medical College of Georgia

Founded in 1828, the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) is the 13th-oldest continuously operating medical education institution in the United States and the third-oldest medical school in the Southeast. MCG, one of 34 institutions in the University System of Georgia and Georgia's health sciences university, has more than 2,200 students in five schools: Medicine, Allied Health Sciences, Dentistry, Graduate Studies and Nursing. Students come from most of Georgia’s 159 counties. Students from other states and foreign countries comprise approximately 2 percent of MCG’s student body.

MCG offers modern classrooms and laboratories, the 540-bed MCG Medical Center, the Children's Medical Center, extensive outpatient clinics, residence halls, a student center, a wellness center, and an outstanding medical education library with more than 185,000 books and bound journals and some 1,301 periodicals.

With more than 4,000 faculty and staff, MCG is the largest employer in the Augusta area. The School of Medicine has approximately 545 faculty.

Campus Community

The Augusta metropolitan area, with a population of more than 500,000, is the second-largest metropolitan area in Georgia. The city is a regional center for industry, banking, shopping, entertainment and the arts and offers a stimulating cultural, educational and recreational environment. Augusta is a center for sailing, hunting, fishing, tennis, boating and golf and is the home of the internaitonally famous Masters Golf Tournament. Cultural life in Augusta includes a professional civic symphony, an opera company and a national honor ballet company. Augusta is located conveniently between the Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian Mountains. Atlanta is a two-and-a-half hour drive from Augusta.
