Admissions Information
The Medical College of Georgia is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity
Educational Institution. No person shall, on the grounds of age, disability,
gender, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation or status as a
Vietnam Era Veteran, be excluded from participation in, or be otherwise
subjected to discrimination in any educational program, activity or facility.
General Admissions Information
Admission is on a competitive basis. There were 936 applications from Georgia residents
and 1,100 applications from non-residents for admission to the 2007 class. The class consists of 190 students with a maximum of 5 percent from
outside Georgia. There is no required minimum grade point average
or score on the Medical College Admission Test. The Admissions Committee selects
applicants who are best-qualified to study medicine.
Application Procedures
MCG participates in the American Medical College
Application Service (AMCAS), a centralized application service administered by
the Association of American Medical Colleges. Students wishing to apply to the
MCG School of Medicine may obtain the application from
AMCAS and return the completed application to that office between June 1, 2007
and November 1, 2007. The deadline for applying for admission to the August 2008
class is November 1, 2007. MCG must be listed as a
school of application with AMCAS by the November 1 deadline.
Official transcripts from U.S. and Canadian
post-secondary institutions must be received by August 1, 2007 for MCG’s
Early Decision Program and November 15, 2007 for MCG’s Regular Decision Program.
Transcripts must arrive to AMCAS directly from the Registrar’s office.
Applications will be processed in the AMCAS office, then forwarded to the
medical school(s) of the applicant’s choice. Upon receipt of the student’s
application from AMCAS, MCG will forward to applicants approved for further
consideration an application supplement and reference forms. All student
supplemental records (items required in addition to the AMCAS application)
should be returned two weeks after receipt and must be in the
student file by January 7, 2008. These items include all residency
data, reference forms, required course listings and other specifically requested
data.
AMCAS applications for admission to the August
2008 class are available on
the internet at the following web address:
www.aamc.org. This website provides the
2008 application as well as
instructions for the application process.
Application Fee
There is no application fee at the Medical College of Georgia in addition to the
AMCAS fee.
Residents and Non-Residents
Preference is given to Georgia residents. No more than 5 percent
of the entering class each year can be non-residents of Georgia.
State residency policies in higher education are intended to benefit
for the citizens of the state. Applicants for admission may only be classified as residents of one
state. Applicants who
are offered admission as a Georgia resident are expected to maintain Georgia resident status in AMCAS records. Applicants who claim Georgia residence must make claim on their AMCAS application no later than November 1.
No residency changes are permitted after November 1, 2007. Georgia residents who
change their legal state of residence designation with AMCAS after
being accepted at MCG will have their acceptance withdrawn and their
applications for admission reviewed for admission as a non-resident of
Georgia.
Deferment
Accepted students seeking deferment will be considered on a case-by-case
basis. Deferments are not available to applicants who are accepted from our
alternate list. A deferment requires extenuating,
unexpected personal circumstances. To be considered, the student must
write a letter to the Associate Dean of Admissions explaining the reasons for
deferment. Each case will be presented to and voted on by the Admissions
Committee. Only one request for a one-year deferment will be considered.
Deferment requests should not be made to delay a decision of which
medical school to attend. MCG cannot hold scholarship offers made in the initial year of acceptance to the following year. A deferred student is
eligible for scholarship offers in the following year but with no guarantee.
Early Decision Program
The MCG School of Medicine will participate in the Early
Decision Program for the 2008 entering class. Only Georgia residents will be
considered for the Early Decision Program. Applicants must file applications for admission with AMCAS between June 1, 2007 and August 1, 2007.
All applications and official transcripts must be received in the AMCAS office
by the August 1 deadline to be considered under the Early Decision Program.
Early Decision Program applicants must have taken the MCAT by June, 2007. The 2007 entering class included 140 early decision
applications.

Doctor of Medicine/Doctor of
Philosophy Combined Degree Program
General Information
The combined M.D./Ph.D. degree program provides complete
training in medicine and research biomedical sciences required for
careers in investigative medicine. Students complete the
academic requirements for the M.D. degree from the School of Medicine and
the Ph.D. degree from a degree-granting department of biomedical sciences in the
University System of Georgia. Students may choose from eligible Ph.D. programs
at MCG, the University of Georgia, Georgia Institute
of Technology and Georgia State University. The normal time for completing the
degree is six to seven years.
Requirements for Admission
Applicants must fulfill the School of Medicine admissions requirements
in addition to requirements for admission to the combined program.
Completion of a supple mental M.D./Ph.D. program application is required in
addition to the School of Medicine application. Candidates for the dual-degree
program must demonstrate outstanding academic credentials in addition to a
strong interest in pursuing a career in research and investigative medicine.
Generally, prospective candidates for the dual-degree program will be
interviewed concurrently with interviews for the School of Medicine.
Non-residents interested in applying to the M.D./Ph.D. programs should contact
the program’s office while submitting the AMCAS application.
M.D./Ph.D. applicants are not required to be Georgia residents.
For more information,, contact Dr. Edward Inscho, M.D./Ph.D. Program, Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, GA
30912, 706-721-5615.
International Applicants
International students, as well as U.S. citizens, must have completed at
least the last two years of their undergraduate or graduate education in an
accredited U.S. or Canadian institution to be considered for admission to the
School of Medicine.
Transfer with Advanced
Standing
Students enrolled in good standing at other LCME-accredited
medical schools will be considered for transfer admission with advanced standing
to third-year School of Medicine classes only when there are
compelling reasons for the transfer and only on a space-available basis. Courses
taken at the student’s first institution will be evaluated and transfer credit
awarded on a course-by-course basis. Students accepted as advanced-standing
transfers under these circumstances may be required to study on an altered or
modified curriculum and repeat some courses taken at the
first institution. Students seeking to transfer should contact the
Admissions Office by January 7 to determine if any transfer spaces will be
available. For application forms and additional information, contact the
Office of the Associate Dean for Admissions, School of Medicine, AA-2040,
Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, GA 30912-4760.
Immunization Policy
All entering MCG students must provide sufficient evidence
of full immunization against mumps, rubella (German measles),
rubeola (red measles), polio, diphtheria, tetanus, varicella (chickenpox), and
hepatitis B. Students must have had a tuberculin test within
three months prior to MCG enrollment and annually thereafter. An
immunization card obtained at Student Health will serve as official
documentation. The following exceptions to this policy may apply in individual
cases:
-
Student Health may grant exceptions based on medical or religious reasons. The student must
provide supporting documentation.
-
In cases where compliance with this policy prior to first enrollment is not
feasible for the enrolling student, such as a late acceptance, the
Director of Student Health may grant an extension. Students granted an extension shall be allowed to register
provisionally and shall be disenrolled if in non-compliance after the
provisional period.
HIV-AIDS Statement
The MCG School of Medicine encourages applicants who believe they are at risk for HIV infection to seek HIV and counseling prior to admission.
Depending on the stage of
HIV infection, persons who test positive may wish to reconsider their career
goals because of:
- the
prolonged period of medical education and the significant possibility that
they may become disabled during training or early in their career;
- the
infectious hazards of certain portions of medical education and practice;
- barriers to certain invasive clinical activities and fields of
specialization because of possible hazards to patients; and
- the
financial cost of medical education.
Students who suspect they have HIV
infection must report this information immediately to the Dean of the
School of Medicine and to Hospital Epidemiology.
Failure to report a known HIV infection may result in
disciplinary action, including dismissal.
Tobacco-Free Policy
MCG is proud to be a tobacco-free campus.
