Dean's Student Summer Research
Program Application
Guidelines
Application Deadline: February 4,
2008
General Information
-
The Dean’s Student Summer Research
Fellowship (DSRF) Program is aimed primarily at students who have
completed their first year of medical school. Students in more senior
years may apply if their schedules allow. All students
are required to be in good academic standing in order to accept the
summer fellowship.
-
No course credit is given for this
program.
-
Faculty advisors must be faculty in the
School of Medicine — not collaborators at other institutions. Students
may work with external collaborators but primary responsibility for the
project must reside with an MCG School of Medicine faculty member.
-
Faculty advisors may sponsor more than one
applicant but no more than one summer fellow will be awarded for each
faculty advisor.
-
Many
applications are based on faculty mentor's existing grants. It is
important for students to demonstrate what level of involvement they had
with writing project summary. The student should write the
application with advice and critique from the faculty advisor. The
application should not be written by the faculty advisor or transposed
from a previously existing grant application.
-
All DSRF recepients must submit a 300 word
structured abstract (Introduction, Objectives, Methods, Results,
Summary/Discussion) at the conclusion of the study to the DSRF Chair by
August 17, 2008.
-
Upon notification that a project has been
funded, the student faculty advisor should contact the appropriate
approval committee (HAC, CAURE, etc.) to determine the information
needed to ensure review and approval.
-
The Office of Grants and Contracts verifies
all institutional approvals prior to the start of the research project.
The Chair of the DSRF program will inform Grants and Contracts of
sponsored project.
-
This Program does not cover travel funds
for student fellows.
Application Requirements
-
Prepare the original application and five
copies
-
Each applicant will write a brief personal
statement (half page) identifying their goals for the summer program and
future aspirations in research.
-
Students who are awarded a fellowship will
be required to provide Kelly Callaway in the School of Medicine Office
of Operations with a copy of their signature page and the summary page
of their application that contains the project title. Kelly in turn will
prepare one Intramural Routing Form and send it to the Division of
Sponsored Program Administration (DSPA) for processing the overall
project once all compliance issues (eg human/animial subject approvals,
biohazards/radiation/chemical safety clearances) have been addressed.
