Junior Faculty Development Program:
Career Development 101 (CD-101)

Purpose:
This one-day program, held in the fall, is designed to help new MCG faculty jumpstart their careers by getting the big picture of what a career in medical education is all about.  Our hypothesis is that many new faculty flounder during their first few years at MCG, and thus are not adequately prepared for promotion and/or tenure the first time around.  Additionally, because they do not know the “rules of the game” so to speak, they get discouraged about continuing a career in academic medicine, eventually leaving for private practice or taking another teaching position elsewhere.  We feel that if new faculty can get solid direction and resources at this early stage in their careers, they will be better prepared for promotion, have higher job satisfaction, and consider pursuing a long-term career in academic medicine.

Content:
In CD-101, we discus practical issues such as teaching, research, promotion and tenure, and MCG resources available for ongoing faculty development and career satisfaction.  Although the meeting is targeted for faculty in the School of Medicine, non-SOM faculty are also welcome to attend, as much of the information is relevant across all schools at MCG.  A brief outline of this annual one-day program is shown below:

  • A Brief Introduction to the MCG Academic Medical Center
  • Teaching in Academic Medicine:  Who, where, and how we teach
  • Evaluating and Documenting Your Teaching Efforts
    • Preparing for your annual performance review
    • Documenting your teaching:  Educator’s portfolio
  • Research in Academic Medicine:  What kinds of research can I do?
  • MCG Resources that will help you succeed in research
  • Planning your academic career
    • Preparing for Promotion and/or Tenure
  • Keys to thriving in an academic medicine career:
    • Finding mentors
    • Developing and honing your skills (CDEC workshops)
