CRDTS Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is there a fee to the candidate to take the CRDTS exam at the Medical College of Georgia?

YES. There is a facility fee above the fee charged by CRDTS. Current facility fees are:
DENTIST - $400.00
DENTAL HYGIENE - $125.00

These fees are due to MCG one month prior to the scheduled exam date.

Please send a money order or certified check in the correct amount made payable to the MCG School of Dentistry. To insure proper credit, be sure the candidate's name and CRDTS Examination Facility Fee are present on the check or money order and mail to:

Claire McElmurray
MCG School of Dentistry, AD-1111
1459 Laney Walker Blvd
Augusta, GA 30912-8320

2. Does the Medical College of Georgia provide patients?

NO. It is the responsibility of each candidate to provide their own patients. MCG does not have a broad patient pool and does not allow applicants access to patient records. Securing back-up patients is strongly advised. The candidate must make arrangements for their patients to receive follow-up care if treatment during the exam is unsatisfactory.

All questions regarding eligibility of patient and/or types of patients must be answered through the Central Regional Dental Testing Service (CRDTS) 1-800-370-0380.

3. Will I have access to screen patients and/or take x-rays of the patients I bring in?

Treatment of patients within the Dental School is restricted to academically registered students only, except on the days of the CRDTS examination. Access to our facilities are only permitted through an orientation course that is offered the week prior to the Summer Examination. You must be registered in this course. The cost of this course is $450 for Dentists (rates are subject to change and are not guaranteed). For additional details, please refer to the Orientation Review Course page on this website, or you may contact Claire McElmurray at (706) 721-7019 with any questions.

4. Does the Medical College of Georgia provide instruments or rent instruments?

Instruments are available for rent. The cost is the same for renting one or more instruments. Cavitrons are not available for rental.

Hygiene candidates:

  • $1500 will be charge to MasterCard, Visa or Discover
  • $1150 will be refunded after return of instruments
  • $350 is non-refundable

Dentist:

  • $6000 will be charged to MasterCard, Visa or Discover
  • $4500 will be refunded after return of instruments
  • $1500 will be non-refundable

Candidate must present credit card (MasterCard, Visa or Discover only) to the Business Office no later than 3:00 pm the Friday of the Board Examination. We are not able to accept checks for instrument rental fees; these fees must be paid with a credit card. The candidate's credit card will be charged the full amount (example: $6000 if dentist). The candidate will be given a rental slip to present to Central Sterilization for instrument pick-up. The candidate will return instruments to Central Sterilization where an inspection of the instruments will be made. If all instruments are returned undamaged, Central Sterilization will give the candidate a statement indicating that their credit card will be credited the refundable amount. The cost for any missing instruments will be deducted from the refundable amount. The refund will be applied to the account by Tuesday following the Board Examination.

5. What do I do if the facility's equipment malfunctions during the examination?

If you should experience any difficulty during the examination, do not attempt to make repairs. Two qualified equipment technicians will be on duty in the clinic. Inform the clinic assistant of any difficulty.

6. Will the use of chairside dental assistants be allowed?

YES, but MCG is not responsible for supplying chairside assistants. Each candidate is responsible for supplying their own chairside assistant.

7. Will I be allowed access to the school's facilities?

We invite potential dental and dental hygiene candidates to visit MCG to become acquainted with our facilities. The clinic facilities will be available for inspection by prior appointment only on Wednesdays between 9:00-11:30 am or between 1:30-4:00 pm. Please contact Arlene Bates through e-mail at abates@mcg.edu or by calling 706-721-2811 (leave message) or 706-721-6180 (office - voicemail not available) to arrange for a tour.

8. Will candidates be allowed to access the clinics early on exam days?

Dental candidates may access the clinic at 7:00 am on each exam day. The hygiene candidates may seat their patients and prepare their assigned treatment areas 45 minutes prior to the published patient approval time.

9. What type of handpiece fits the units at the facility?

Handpiece, composite lights, and all instruments must be supplied by the candidate. If you intend to use fiber optics, then you must have a handpiece that fits a 4 hole I.S.O. coupling.

Dental Hygiene candidates who use ultrasonic scalers must bring their own. Titan Ultrasonic Scalers should fit a 4-hole I.S.O. handpiece coupling.  Our units accommodate Cavitrons with a 1/4" male quick disconnect (water line) and a 3/8" male quick disconnect (air line). Please contact Bernard Bembry at (706) 721-2461 for more information.

NOTE:  Do not bring KAVO handpieces or KAVO ultrasonic scalers.

We are not adaptable to the tooling unless they will connect to a standard 4 hole I.S.O. coupling.

10. Does MCG provide Dentoforms for this test?

NO.  You must purchase your dentoform from Acadental ModuPRO at www.acadental.com/crdts.htm or by calling 1-888-585-0678.
