This program area focuses on the physical properties of biomaterials including metals and their corrosion products, and resins, as well as the interactions of the materials with biological systems. The studies are directed toward interactions at the molecular level with particular emphasis on oxidative stress, cell signaling and how the materials affect the physico-chemical aspects of the cell surface. Additional studies examine the interactions of the materials with the teeth and bone.
Research into the physical properties of biomaterials include the areas of photopolymerization and properties of ceramics. Clinical studies examine the materials under conditions of normal use.
