ALERT

There are no confirmed cases of Swine Flu in Georgia at this time, and fortunately all confirmed cases in the United States have been mild.  However, there is the potential for the illness to become widespread, and the incubation period is short, 24-48 hours.  If you had a flu shot, you are not protected against this new strain. Please take time to review the following, and if applicable, call Student Health at 706-721-3448 during the normal hours of 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.  If it is after hours, please call 706-231-5667, 706-228-5048, or email: jmiller@mcg.edu.

  • If you traveled to Mexico during spring break and if you or someone you traveled with became sick with a febrile illness that was associated with body aches and upper respiratory symptoms (sore throat, runny nose, and cough), please call Student Health.
  • If you have been diagnosed with the swine flu, have current symptoms of a flu-like illness, or develop symptoms of a flu-like illness; defined as the sudden onset of fever > to 101 degrees, body aches, and upper respiratory symptoms including a dry cough, runny nose, or sore throat,
    • There is no reason to panic. The disease has thus far been mild in persons diagnosed with swine flu in the United States.
    • Please notify Student Health at one of the above numbers. Please call before coming to the clinic to be seen.
    • Stay home and do not attend classes.
    • Use routine infectious disease precautions:  Use common sense, wash your hands frequently, and avoid exposing other people. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, do not share your eating or drinking utensils, avoid close contact with other household members and friends, and avoid public places or use of public transportation.
    • If you become very ill or experience worsening symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, dehydration, and/or a persistent fever of > 102 degrees that does not respond to Tylenol, Aleve, or Advil, please go to an emergency room with notification that you will be arriving.
    • Do not return to classes for 36-48 hours after your symptoms have resolved.
