All radioactive material use areas at MCG are posted with one of the signs above. This sign should alert you that the area is controlled for radiation safety purposes.

General Radiation Safety Procedures:

Do not eat, drink, apply cosmetics in a radioactive materials use area.
Never handle or dispose of radioactive waste.
Do not enter a posted area without checking with the person in charge.
Do not clean up radioactive spills even if called on by a ward or clinic to do so.

 

Clinical Uses of Radiation

Radiation producing devices and radioactive materials are used in the hospital to diagnose and treat disease.

These machines only generate radiation when they are in actual use. Since only a small amount of radiation scatters in the room during the time these machines are operating, radiation caution signs are not required to be posted.

Regardless of the particular use of radiation at MCG, safety is assured when all personnel adhere to the radiation protection guidelines. The Radiation Safety Office is tasked with ensuring compliance with all of these guidelines

Research Uses of Radiation

Radioactive materials are used throughout the research facilities. All of the areas that utilize radioactive material are well marked with the "Caution Radioactive Materials " signs.
