Dean praises School of Allied Health Sciences
accomplishments
Jennifer Hilliard
2007 June 8
The Medical College of Georgia School
of Allied Health Sciences has reached most the objectives of a
2002 five-year strategic plan, according to Dr. Shelley Mishoe,
dean of the school.
"We set strategic goals that we designed to be a vision and
almost unreachable, so they are timeless" she said in her State
of the School Address June 7. "Then we set objectives to
operationalize those goals, and I’m happy to report that we have
met those objectives."
School successes over the last five years have included
successful recruitment and retention of nearly 50 new faculty,
the continued increase in school enrollment and implementing
several new programs.
"Our school now enrolls 26 percent of the total student
population at MCG," Dean Mishoe said. "We also retain most of
those students, around 95 percent."
Students continue to perform well academically. Schoolwide pass
rates for discipline-specific licensing exams are at 95 percent.
Students in three of the school’s programs – respiratory
therapy, physician assistant and dental hygiene
have 100 percent pass rates on licensing exams, she said.

SAHS 40th Birthday, 1968-2008
Next year, Homecoming ’08 will kick off the School’s 40th
anniversary and, according to Dr. Mishoe, it should be better than
ever! Discussions with Dr. Mishoe and University Advancement have
taken place about various ideas for celebrating the year long event.
It will be an exciting time for the School so if departments have any
ideas or suggestions, please send them via email to Dr. Mishoe.
In order to prepare for these events, Ms. Rachel Jay, from MCG
Foundation, will be assisting us in managing our contacts for alumni
and donors. Ms. Suzi Johnson will also be working closely with
departments in obtaining data and updating our alumni database.

SAHS 40th Birthday, 1968-2008
continued
Dr.
Mishoe would like departments to develop a formal process to
make it mandatory for senior students to complete a
contact/consent form prior to their graduating as part of their
exit exams. A form will be developed by the Dean's educational support team.

SAHS MAGAZINE
The School will begin working on a new SAHS Magazine that will be
tied into the 40th anniversary. Ms. Christine Deriso will be working
with us as the editor and Ms. Debra Steel as the freelance writer.
The magazine will focus on people, past and present, with a “wow”
factor. One suggestion is to feature the different classes who have
graduated over the last 40 years. Departments have been asked to
identify an alumnus who has a broad appeal and national reputation,
who could be featured in the magazine and possibly identified as the
next distinguished alumnus.
