Technical Standards
Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Career Description: A health care professional who possesses the knowledge and skills to utilize for diagnostic purpose, and who has the ability to produce a diagnostic image through associated instrumentation.  The sonographer provides basic nursing and medical care, and assists with emergency patient treatment where indicated.

Major Tasks of Job Performance and Clinical Education 

  1. Communicate with patients & others in completion of tasks.

  2. Retrieve & dispatch patients, within the department & well being while he/she is under the sonographer's jurisdiction.

  3. Provide basic life support services when needed. 

  4. Secure & assist with advanced life support services, where indicated.

  5. Assist with patient movement & perform positioning for sonographic imaging & procedures.

  6. Retrieve, manipulate, & operate sonographic equipment & adjunct instruments for imaging.

  7. Prepare & use procedure materials such as:  sterile trays, instruments, linens, & pt. care items.

  8. Retrieve, manipulate, & operate sonographic equipment & adjunct instruments for imaging.

  9. Retrieve, secure for filming, & dispatch sonographic film holders & recording mechanisms during the imaging process.

  10. Process and/or retrieve sonographic images (hard copy films or digitally stored), & dispatch patient & sonographic records.

  11. Evaluate images for technical accuracy & procedures determination.

  12. Assist the physician when doing special procedures ( amniocentesis, biopsies).

  13. Perform surgical & bedside sonography, move & operate related instrumentation.

  14. Work in various sonography departments in the hospital & outside clinical facilities.

  15. Perform basic equipment maintenance.

  16. Receive & schedule patients, file, & assist with office & clerical work.

  17. Process procedure results in accepted formats (such as graphs, curves, & charts).

  18. Perform diagnostic sonographic tasks for an eight hour shift assignment.
