Clinical Rotations



Procedural Skills: Many procedures that are important in the primary-care setting are taught during the three years within the framework of a defined curriculum.

  • Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
  • Colposcopy/LEEP
  • Endometrial Biopsy
  • Flexible Nasolaryngoscopy 
  • Pulmonary Functions Studies 
  • Minor Surgery/Dermatological Surgery 
  • No Scalpel Vasectomy 
  • Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)

A one-month procedures elective is required, ensuring exposure to important primary-care procedural skills. 


PGY-1

During the Intern year, July is dedicated solely to helping familiarize interns with their colleagues and with basic knowledge and procedural skills they will need throughout their residency. ACLS, BLS and NRP certification is offered during this month so that interns enter the hospital in August feeling well prepared to face the year ahead. The first month schedule encompasses:

  • Electronic Medical Record Training 
  • Clinics 
  • Simple skin biopsy and suture techniques 
  • Lectures in pharmacology, preventive health management and other commonly encountered problems in family medicine 
  • Introduction to practice management, flexible sigmoidoscopy, video otoscopy and colposcopy, among a variety of other topics. 

Out of the remaining eleven months of the Intern year, three months are spent on Family Medicine Inpatient Service (FMIS), and two months are spent in each of the following: Pediatrics, Obstetrics, and Surgery. One month each is spent in MICU and Emergency Room training.

PGY-2

During the second year, rotations are in thirteen four-week blocks.  Two blocks are spent in FMIS and in Behavioral Medicine/Community Medicine/Practice Management. In addition, one month of training is also provided in each of the following: CCU/Cardiology, Neurology, Geriatrics (Georgia War Veterans' Nursing Home), Rural Health, Pediatric Outpatient, Orthopedics, Sports Medicine, Gynecology, and ER.

PGY-3

During the third year, rotation are in thirteen four-week blocks. Specifically, three of these blocks are on FMIS, as well as one block each in Rural Health, Ambulatory Pediatrics, Women's Health, Dermatology, Urology/Radiology, ENT/Ophthalmology and Psychiatry. PGY-3 residents also have three four-week blocks of Electives.
