About the OfficeThe Office of Technology Transfer
and Economic Development (OTTED) is designed to help faculty, staff and
student researchers with their inventions by serving as a resource Protection of intellectual property is usually in the form of a patent, though copyrights and trademarks, as well as trade secrets, are also forms of IP protection. The objective of such activities is to facilitate the formation of new products and companies based on MCG inventions so that they can benefit the University and society in general. Technology transfer compliments, and does not compete with, normal academic activity. The services which the OTTED can provide will enable inventors to concentrate on their research and academic responsibilities without being encumbered with the legal and financial complexities of interacting with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, marketing the technology to the appropriate parties, and negotiating contracts with commercial entities. Inventors can concentrate on the important tasks of educating students, conducting research, and disseminating knowledge. The OTTED also serves as a focal point or an entrée for the corporate sector when they wish to interact with the Medical College of Georgia. Companies having an interest in working with faculty members, funding specialized research programs, or wishing to gain access to our equipment and resources likely will work through the OTTED and the faculty member or lab director. The tech transfer office will make certain that your intellectual property rights are protected. It also will work with legal counsel, the Office of Grants and Contracts, and other groups as appropriate to expedite the interaction while ensuring that that it is done in accordance with MCG and Regent’s policies. The OTTED works closely with the Georgia Medical Center Authority (GMCA) when new companies are being formed or are relocating to Augusta. The GMCA is establishing research, development and light manufacturing space in the community for life sciences companies. See www.georgiamedicalcenterauthority.org/. For new start-up companies that need specialized wet lab space and high tech equipment, there is a new business incubator on the MCG campus. The Life Sciences Business Development Center, or "LSBDC", has 5 suites, consisting of a large open lab, a clean room, and 2 offices (total of 1,130 sq ft ea). The LSBDC, managed by the OTTED offers specialized equipment, plus access to a "Preferred Provider Program", business mentors and advisors, shared resources (like autoclaves and high-cost equipment, and the MCG core labs and related amenities). Please visit the LSBDC website at www.mcg.edu/incubator/ for more information. We look forward to your participation in the technology
transfer program, and to assisting you in your research and creative activities. Office of Technology Transfer and Economic Development |
