About MCG

Established in 1828, MCG is the state’s only public medical school. It consists of major teaching and research units that include medicine, nursing, dentistry, and allied health. It also has active graduate and post-doctoral programs, and it serves nearly 2,000 students in 44 academic areas.

MCG is undergoing a major change in its orientation. Having spent more than one century with a primary emphasis on teaching and delivering healthcare, we have initiated a revitalization program to enhance and expand our research capabilities. To illustrate the commitment that the state, the institution and our capable faculty have provided, note that our extramural research funding rose by 10 - 27% the past two years, and we are on track to accomplish that kind of growth for the foreseeable future. We anticipate having $100 million or more of annual research support by 2006.

The MCG faculty Biomedical Research Council, and the Vice President for Research have identified the following areas as having notable strength, and as being targeted for significant, future growth:

  • Cardiovascular Diseases

  • Neurological Diseases

  • Cancer

  • Infection and Inflammation

  • Biomedical Technology (including genomics, epidemiology and proteomics)
