Mission Statement of the MCG Office of Postdoctoral Affairs
The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs was established in August 2000 to serve as a central resource and to enhance and support the work experiences of postdoctoral appointees, their faculty mentors, and staff engaged in research and research training. Our mission is to act promptly to develop policies and practices for systematically incorporating postdoctoral education into the overall academic program. We will act as an advocate to periodically evaluate the balance of interests among postdoctoral appointees, their faculty mentors, their departments/centers or institutes, and MCG as a whole, in order to assure that the legitimate educational needs and career interests of postdoctoral fellows are being fully met.

Definition of a Postdoctoral Appointment (AAMC)
The typical appointee was recently awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., Sc.D., M.D.) in an appropriate field; the appointment involves substantially full-time research or scholarship; and the appointment is viewed as preparatory for a full-time academic and/or research career; and the appointment is not part of a clinical training program; and the appointee works under the supervision of an MCG faculty mentor; and the appointee has the freedom, and is expected, to publish the results of his or her research or scholarship during the period of the appointment with the assistance of the MCG faculty mentor.
