Disposing of Controlled Substances
Disposal of controlled Drugs – MCG Policy
Each PI (Registrant) wanting to dispose of DEA controlled substances should complete a DEA Form 41, http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/21cfr_reports/surrend/41/41_form.pdf,
listing the materials they wish to destroy and submit the form to Ken Erondu at CI 1014. He will request approval from DEA office in Savannah via an email with attachment of scanned copies of the DEA Form 41 that were completed by the registrant to destroy the materials in our facility. With DEA's approval, he will schedule a time for the destruction in the Chemical safety Office (CSO) hazardous waste storage facility. The registrant will bring the material and in the presence of the registrant and a Sworn MCG Public Safety Police Officer, a CSO staff member will dissolve the material in a solvent and pour the solution into a 55-gallon drum. The drum will be picked up at a later date and destroyed by incineration.
After dissolution and transfer of the material to the drum, the DEA Form 41 will be signed by a CSO staff member and the Police Officer as witness. The original copy will be kept by the CSO and a copy will be given to the registrant for his/her records. The CSO will notify DEA after the material has been final destroyed, incinerated. This option will not cost the PI anything as opposed to the other option that was also discussed.
Alternatively, the PI may choose to dispose the material through a Reverse Distributor.
