MCG is accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC most recent accreditation letter October 23, 2009), a Registered Research Facility with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA No. 57-R-0002 most recent inspection July 22, 2009), and has an Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare Olaw Assurance Number A3307-01; approved February 26, 2009 on file in the IACUC office CA 1094 or Laboratory Animal Services CB 1901.

 

To comply with federal laws governing the humane care and treatment of laboratory animals, The Medical College of Georgia requires that all uses of invertebrate and vertebrate  animals for research, education, or for any other purpose be approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The IACUC consists of members of the faculty, administration, and community. Any use of animals at MCG without IACUC approval is a violation of MCG policy and federal law.  

The committee will use the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and other applicable guidelines as recommended in the management of the animal care and use program at MCG.  (Copies available in the IACUC office CA 1094).

Functions

  • Semi-annual evaluation of the animal care program
  • Semi-annual inspection of facilities
  • Report to Institutional Official and OLAW
  • Advise on the animal care program, facilities and
    personnel training
  • Review animal use protocols
  • Review animal welfare concerns
  • Empowered to suspend animal activity in event of
  • non-compliance
