Office of Scientific Editorial Support

Goal: To provide scientific editorial assistance on manuscripts and grants

Scientific editorial assistance in the preparation of grants and manuscripts is now available to all faculty members at MCG. The service is provided by Rhea-Beth Markowitz, Ph.D., CA-3004, phone 721-7916, email: rbmarkowitz@mail.mcg.edu.

Examples of the support services provided include the following:

  • Ensuring that the paper (grant) is well organized and written in a logical order, with smooth transitions. Can the reader understand what the author is trying to say?
  • Seeing that experiments are described in sufficient detail so that the reader can understand what was (or will be) done.
  • Checking the Methods section for completeness and clarity.
  • Ensuring that Figures match the Figure Legends and that they both match the text. Are the design and lettering appropriate?
Ensuring that correct English, grammar, punctuation and spelling are used.

How to submit:

  1. Manuscripts should be typed, double-spaced and in the appropriate format for the respective journal. The paper should be in its "near final" version, not your first rough draft. (Figures do not need to be originals, however.)
  2. Dr. Markowitz will read the manuscript, mark changes on your hard copy with a red pen, and go over major changes with you when she has finished the editing. When time permits, she will reread your final version. If resubmission of your paper to a journal is necessary, she will read the reviewers' comments and help you address their concerns.
  3. Grant applications may be submitted section by section. Since deadlines are important for grants, please let Dr. Markowitz know in advance if, and approximately when, you will be handing in your drafts. Turnaround time is usually 2-3 days (but can be less when necessary!)
  4. Submission of your paper or grant to this office does not take the place of a critical read by a colleague in your field. Dr. Markowitz may or may not be able to critique the science, depending on the subject area; her primary function is to make your manuscript clear, concise, and easy (easier) to read.
  5. If you feel that Dr. Markowitz has been helpful, an acknowledgement in your paper would be appreciated. Also, please let her know when papers are accepted, in what journal, and when they will be published.
