Picture of Research and Education BuildingThe Medical College of Georgia maintains a centralized animal care program with administrative responsibility assigned to the Office of Laboratory Animal Services. Animal facilities for this project are located nearby the investigator’s laboratory.

The facility and program is accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC), a Registered Research Facility with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA No. 57-R-0002), and has an Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare OLAW Assurance Statement (A3307-01; dated March 2, 2005 on file.

There are two veterinarians and 17 animal care technicians on staff. The institutional animal care and use committee (IACUC) reviews all research and teaching protocols involving the use of animals and fulfills its other mandated responsibilities.

Reporting Inappropriate or Deficient Animal Care or Treatment:
Any person observing inappropriate or deficient animal care or treatment should immediately notify Dr. Laura Tambrallo, Director, Laboratory Animal Services (1-3421), Dr. Ralph Kolbeck, Chair, IACUC (1-2180), Ms. jenny Whitlock, Compliance Coordinator (1-0198) or any member of the IACUC. No facility employee, committee member or laboratory personnel shall be discriminated against or be subject to any reprisal for reporting violations of any regulation or standard under the Animal Welfare Act.  The complainant’s identity will be kept confidential when requested.
