Guidelines for the Care of Mice and Rats in Solid Tumor Growth Studies1. All surgical procedures must be carried out under aseptic conditions (Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, pp. 60-64). 2. The transplantation of tumors into inguinal areas or other locations that may impair of cause pain (e.g., footpad, tail, brain, eye) is discouraged. It is preferred that transplantation of tumors be performed to the back or the flank of the animal. Scientific justification should be provided for sites other than the back or flank. 3. Any biologic material that is to be used in solid tumor growth studies must be demonstrated to be free of murine pathogens. 4. Monitor tumor size each morning and evening. 5. Animals must be euthanized if more than 10% of the tumor surface becomes ulcerated, or if the tumor becomes neurotic and ruptures. 6. Tumor burden must not exceed 10% of the animal’s normal body weight. 7. In tumor therapy experiments in rodents, weight loss must not exceed 20% of body weight as determined at beginning of experiment. 8. Animals that become moribund must be euthanized. |
