What paperwork do I need to submit to obtain approval to use research
animals? Where do I submit it?
The Institutional Animal Care and Use committee (IACUC) reviews all
Animal Use Protocols (AUPs) before research may
begin. The AUP form must first be submitted to Ms. Jenny Whitlock,

How do I add a title or funding agency to an already approved AUP?
Submit a signed "Amendment request form" to Ms. Jenny Whitlock,

How do I access animal/and or occupational health and safety online
training?

How do I get assistance on writing my Animal Use Protocol (AUP)?
You may receive a pre-review of your AUP from Dr. Nancy Rodriguez (721-8575) or Dr. Patricia Charlton (721-0111) if the questions involve the animal
procedures. Ms. Whitlock may be consulted on most other questions you
may have.

Do I have to submit an AUP if I only want to use animal tissue?
A "Tissue/Embryo Use Only" form may be used. Please refer to
the Animal Care and Use website under Animal Use Protocol forms.
How can I submit an amendment to my AUP?
You can submit either a major or minor amendment depending on the nature of
the change to the original AUP. Please refer to the Animal Care and
Use website under Animal Use Protocols forms for further differentiation.
How long is an AUP approval valid?
An AUP is approved for three years, but must be reviewed by the IACUC on an
annual basis to keep it active.
How often does the IACUC meet?
The IACUC meets on the third Thursday of every month. Meeting
dates and submission deadlines can be found on our website.
How soon after the IACUC meeting should I expect to receive my
approval letter?
If the IACUC approves your AUP at the monthly meeting, Ms. Whitlock will inform you of your approval and will
request a final copy of the AUP with all responses to the committees
questions incorporated and signature. An AUP number will then be
assigned and the approval letter mailed to the PI.
How do I order animals for my research once I receive IACUC approval?

How do I access the animal facility?

How do I procure pharmaceutical drugs such as anesthetics for my work?
Contact Mr. Cedric Bouey, Veterinary Technician, LAS at (706)
721-0201 or Ms. Jamie Frank. LAS will provide antibiotics as of January 2004; however, investigators will no longer be able to
procure Controlled Substances through LAS. Each department is responsible for obtaining a DEA license
for faculty use in their purchase of schedule drugs.

Where can I get assistance in specific animal techniques, such as
providing anesthesia or blood sampling?

How do I get animals shipped to MCG from an outside institution?
If originating from an approved vendor i.e. Harlan, Charles River or Jackson
Labs contact Ms. Kambre Curry 1-3421..
Where will my animals be housed?
Dr. Rodriguez assigns space after consultation with the investigator to
determine specific animal needs such as nonstandard husbandry, special diet, bedding, or
caging. Mr. Rennie Wolfe, Assistant Director, LAS (706) 721-2685 is
responsible for inventory and maintenance of animal housing equipment.
How do I find out about animal costs, including billing and per diem
charges?
