1.

What is MCG Alert?

MCG Alert is a mass notification to assist the university with the ability to reach students, faculty, staff, and designated groups with time-sensitive information within minutes.  During critical situations, unforeseen events, institution closure, or emergencies, MCG will use this system to broadcast pertinent information, breaking developments, and appropriate response measures.

2.

Why do we need MCG Alert?

Although university campuses are usually safe places, emergencies and disasters do occur.  MCG is committed to keeping you as safe as possible through effective and timely communication prior to, during, and following emergencies.  Today we are forced to prepare for situations that we never could have anticipated happening and recognize the important role that immediate communication plays in keeping us safe.

3.

How does MCG Alert work?

Through the MCG Alert system, the university can send and track messages at your MCG e-mail address and up to six phone numbers for each subscriber.  The system sends messages via four different methods of communication:

  • Voice messages to home, work, and cell phones
  • Text messages (SMS) to cell phones, PDAs and other text-based devices (individual text charges from your provider may apply)
  • Written messages to your MCG e-mail account
  • Messages to TTY/TDD receiving devices for the hearing impaired

NOTE:  At this time, pager numbers are not compatible with the MCG Alert system.

The MCG Alert system will be tested once each semester and is intended for emergency use only.

4.

How do I become a part of the MCG Alert system?
It is crucial that the university is able to notify the MCG family immediately in emergency situations.   For that reason, everyone on campus has been automatically subscribed to MCG Alert.  Your MCG e-mail address and contact numbers are downloaded into the system from SoftServ for faculty or staff and PULSE for students.

5.

What does it cost?
There is no cost to you.  MCG is providing this for your safety.  However, if you select to receive a text message, individual text charges from your provider may apply.

6.

What contact data should I provide?
The system allows storing of up to six phone numbers for each subscriber.  Your assistance is needed to make the system as efficient as possible. Please log in to MyMCG and select the MCG Alert icon review your contact information, make updates, and add additional phone numbers as desired.  Adding your cell phone number or other contacts where you can most quickly and easily be reached is especially important.

7.

My friend recieved a message from MCG Alert, but I did not.  Why?

It is possible that we do not have your current contact information in the system from SoftServ for faculty or staff and PULSE for students.  Please log in to MyMCG and select the MCG Alert icon to review your contact information.

8.

My friend recieved a text message from MCG Alert.  How?
To receive a text (SMS) message from the system, you will need to identify the device phone number as an “SMS Phone” using the drop-down list when you add it to your contact numbers.

9.

I received a message in my e-mail inbox, but when I clicked the link to play the message nothing happened.  Why?
You may not have a default media player installed.  You will need speakers and software installed on your computer to listen to messages.

10.

I recieved the message but I missed the information.   What do I do?

While on the call, you can replay the message by pressing the star key (*) at the end of the message.  You may also check your MCG e-mail to locate the link for that message.

X11

11.

I recieved the message but it kept repeating.  Why?

The system does its best to detect whether it has reached a live person or an answering machine.  Sometimes loud ambient noises may cause the system to repeat.  If this happens, use the mute feature on your phone or move to a quieter location to prevent the message from repeating.

X12

12.

I see a caller ID display of 706-721-9530.  Who is this?
When MCG Alert sends a message out, it will always display Caller ID information.  This number is the Emergency Management Program office.  Please save this number as a contact to represent MCG Alert is calling you.

13.

What should I do if I receive a call or e-mail from MCG Alert?
You should take it very seriously as this system will only be used when there is an immediate threat.  Follow the instructions provided and take immediate action.  For maintenance, the MCG Alert system will be tested once each semester but these messages will be clearly identified as tests.
