What should I look for in a infant care program?
When looking at an infant program, consider the state-mandated ratios
that have been provided for you in this handout. Keep in mind that the
lower the child/adult ratio, the more individual attention your child
will receive.
- The environment should have cribs or other bedding that has been
approved for infant sleeping.
- Infants should always be placed on his/her back and additional
items such as pillows and stuffed animals should never be left with
a sleeping infant.
- Swings, high chairs, mats and pillows that allow for tummy time
should be available.
- A changing table located near a sink and brightly colored toys
that are large and easy for infants to grab should be available.
- Although many programs may have them, due to safety concerns, it
is recommended that facilities not use walkers. Exersaucers are
recommended instead because they are stationary but still allow the
child to move.
- Parents should be provided with information about your child’s
daily schedule, such as eating and toileting.
