Frequently Used OTC Medications for the Common Cold

I. Nose drops: Don’t use for more than 3 days in a row 

Name of Medication Ingredient Instructions
Neosynephrine 1/8% - ¼% Phenylephrine hydrochloride Use 1/8% from 2-6 yrs of age

Use 1/4% from 6 yrs - adult

NaSal  drops or spray Saline 2 drops TID
Otrivin 0.05% Xylometazoline hydrochloride do not give under 2 yrs of age
Otrivin 0.1% Same do not give under 12 yrs of age
Afrin - spray, drops, mist Oxymetazoline hydrochloride Use over 6 years of age

II. PO Meds: Antihistamines

Benadryl Diphenylhydramine 6 m-12 m: 1/3 tsp bid
12m - 3 yr: 1/2 tsp bid
> 3 yr: 1/2 tsp tid
Chlortrimeton Chlorpheniramine maleate po liquid; 4/8 mg tabs; 4 mg is short acting; 8 mg 12 hours

III. Antihistamine/Decongestant Combinations: most contain the same ingredients
