Introduction: This handout is recommended to practitioners who want to establish a program. Currently there are 1000 sites in 50 states with 2.5 million books given out each year. Our program at MCG was started by Dr. Michael Palumbo in 2000.

The process for becoming a nationally recognized ROR site:

  1. In preparing an application for start-up funding, you should have a red program manual, information packet, and a complete 4-page application for start-up funding (refer to application guidelines).  If you need any of these materials, please call the ROR National Center at (617) 629-8042, extension 235 to request complete information, or download the materials in PDF format from our website.  ROR National staff is available for questions regarding program development.
  2. Completed applications must be received by the quarterly deadline date to be considered for funding in that round: January 1, April 1, July 1, or October 1.
  3. Letters indicating the status of your application are sent soon after its receipt.  You may be contacted by a staff person from the ROR National Center for clarification on particular items in your application either before or after the panel review.  For this reason, your e-mail address is very important to panelists and staff.
  4. Decision letters are normally sent within 6-8 weeks of the application deadline.
  5. Grants from ROR are restricted to book purchases only, for children 6 months to five years of age seen in well-child visits.  Most grants are in the form of a prepaid account for use in the ROR Book Catalogue.
  6. If your application is approved, the Grant Award Agreement you will receive must be completed and returned to the ROR National Center within 10 days of receipt.  When the grant award agreement is received by the ROR National Center, it is copied for our files and returned to the site.  The book purchasing information, including an ROR Book Catalogue and Publishers list, is mailed with the award agreement.
  7. When these steps have been completed, a site is ready to begin its ROR program.  ROR National Center staff will continue to be available for technical assistance as necessary.
  8. Completion of brief ROR Site Progress Reports, to be submitted to the National Center on a bi-annual basis, is a requirement of the ROR award agreement for all sites.

Medical providers (physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants) from each new ROR program must attend a ROR training session.  Training can occur at any time during the start-up process.  ROR trainings can take place on-site at your facility, for regional cluster groups, or during medical or professional conferences (AAP, NACHC, etc.).  Contact the ROR National Programs Coordinator to discuss training arrangements for your providers.
