Augusta Veterans Affairs Medical Center

The Augusta VAMC Otolaryngology service is an integral part of the
Medical College of Georgia Otolaryngology Department and as such offers a
comprehensive Otolaryngology/Head and Neck service covering all aspects of
Otolaryngology with the exception of pediatrics.
Each 3rd year MCG Otolaryngology resident (PGY 4) spends 6 months on an
active service including 2.5 days of clinic service and 2.5 days of surgery
each week during which time he/she has extensive exposure to head and neck
neoplasms, otologic diseases, sinus diseases and facial plastic and
reconstructive challenges.
The resident is under the direct supervision of an attending faculty at all
times and consulting MCG Otolaryngology faculty are available to participate
in otologic and facial plastic cases and procedures. However, the resident
is responsible for all patient rounds, intern and student teaching and is
considered the primary surgeon on all surgical cases.
In addition to using this rotation to refine his/her surgical skills, the
resident is actively involved in developing skills in patient/family
communications, surgery scheduling, arranging diagnostic studies and
coordinating multiservice care when needed (XRT/HemOnc). The VAMC resident
is also responsible for case selection and presentation for the monthly
combined Otolaryngology Cancer Conference.
The goal of this hands-on rotation is to prepare the Otolaryngology resident
to return to MCG for his/her "chief resident" year with the confidence and
abilities necessary to function in that role and to ultimately enter the
active practice of Otolaryngology with an appreciation for and understanding
of what is involved in excellent patient care.
