Two genes have been closely linked to prostate cancer in families. They are on chromosome one and one is on the X chromosome. In the future, men may be able to know if they have an inherited risk for prostate cancer before it develops. In addition, physicians will be able to identify which patients need to be treated aggressively. However, more work is needed before the prostate cancer gene can be isolated and available for public testing.
