Vision Victory

Dr. Bala Ambati, director of the MCG Cornea Service, recently performed the first implant of the new ReSTOR intraocular lens at MCG Health System, resulting in 20/20 vision for the patient. The implant, approved in April 2005 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, ensures that cataract sufferers undergoing surgery can leave the operating room with good near, intermediate and distance vision. The lens can also eliminate the need for reading glasses or bifocals for patients over 45 who have trouble changing focus from distant to near.

The ReSTOR intraocular lens is a biconvex (convex on both sides) lens that is shaped using apodized diffraction. This process allows optimal management of light into the eye for increased depth of focus. Past lens implants used during cataract surgery could provide only distance vision.
