SONAT shines at state convention

The MCG School of Nursing at Athens took top honors at the Georgia Association of Nursing Students Annual State Convention Oct. 12-14 in Columbus, winning six awards, including Chapter of the Year.

The Athens campus brought home two other top prizes as well: Sonya Willard, a senior, was named GANS Member of the Year, and Assistant Professor Eileen Leaphart was chosen Advisor of the Year. The chapter also collected the Breakthrough to Nursing and Best Scrapbook Awards, and received community service recognition for their donations to Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

Three students were elected to the state board. Junior Kate Simpson will serve as second vice president, junior Caitlyn Abernathy becomes the East District director and senior Sonya Willard serves as chair of the Nominations and Elections Committee and NEC East representative.

The chapter’s resolution, “Reducing the incidence of diabetes through early screenings and education on childhood obesity's affiliation with the disease,” was passed by the House of Delegates. Ms. Leaphart discussed postpartum depression and Robin F. Johns, assistant professor and coordinator of the School of Nursing at Athens, gave presentations on 12-lead ECG interpretation and career development.
