Dr.
Buckley aids NIH initiative
Dr. Peter Buckley, chair of the Department
of Psychiatry and Health Behavior, will help review applications for a
National Institutes of Health initiative to ensure adequate numbers of
well-trained scientists working in biomedical, behavioral and clinical
research.
The review follows a request for
applications from the National Institute of Mental Health, the National
Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders
and Stroke for renewal of Institutional Research Training Programs:
Increasing Diversity, training grants supporting national or regional
programs originally funded in 2002.
Dr. Buckley chairs the NIMH’s Schizophrenia,
Elderly and Spectrum Disorders Review Committee. He has previously served on
NIMH’s Schizophrenia Interventional Special Emphasis Panels, its Data Safety
and Monitoring Board Subcommittee and the NIMH’s Loan Repayment Program
Special Review Panel. Dr. Buckley is a member of the Scientific Council of
the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the Steering Committee of the
International Society for CNS (central nervous system) Drug Development’s
Schizophrenia Initiative and the Board of Directors of the National
Foundation for Mental Health. He is president-elect of the American
Association of Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry.
He is an examiner for the American Board of
Psychiatry and Neurology, an editor of the Journal of Dual Diagnosis, an
editorial board member of five journals, including Psychiatric Times and
Academic Psychiatry, an annual co-editor of the “Mosley Yearbook of
Psychiatry” and a referee for more than 40 journals.
Dr. Buckley came to MCG in 2000 from Case
Western Reserve University where he was vice chair of the Department of
Psychiatry and medical director for the state psychiatric services in
Cleveland. He earned his medical degree from Ireland’s University College
Dublin School of Medicine. He completed internships at St. Vincent’s
University Hospital in Dublin before completing a psychiatry residency and
research fellowship at St. John of God Psychiatric Services in Dublin.

Quarles appointed chair of national committee
Dr. Shirley Quarles, associate professor of health environments and
systems in the School of Nursing, has been appointed chair of the U.S.
Department of Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee on Women Veterans.
The 14-member committee assesses the needs of women veterans for VA
programs including compensation, rehabilitation, outreach and health care,
then makes improvement recommendations to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
Dr. Quarles will serve on the committee until 2008.
Dr. Quarles came to MCG in January from the Atlanta Research and
Education Foundation at the Atlanta VA Medical Center, where she was
director of the Women’s Health Research Initiatives Program. She also served
as an affiliate professor at the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at
Emory University. Previously, she was director of nursing for Student Health
Services at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
A colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves, Dr. Quarles serves as the clinical
consultant for the Third Medical Command based in Fort Gillem, Ga., where
she oversees organization and training support for all medical deployable
assets for the Army Reserves.
She is a past recipient of the Army Service Ribbon, the Army Commendation
Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, the National Defense Service Medal and the
Meritorious Service Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters. She is a member of the
American and Georgia Nursing associations, Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor
Society, the Association of Military Surgeons United States and the Senior
Army Reserve Command Association.
Dr. Quarles received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from North Carolina
Agricultural and Technical State University, a master’s degree in community
health education from UNC-Greensboro, a doctorate in higher education
administration and research from North Carolina State University and a
master’s degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College. She
completed postdoctoral studies in clinical nursing interventions at Emory
University.

Mildred S. Brewer, 72, a retired coder in Health Information
Management Services, who died Oct. 25. She worked at MCG from 1981-99.
