Dr. Bruce MacFadyen Jr.Dr. MacFadyen honored

Dr. Bruce MacFadyen Jr., Moretz/Mansburger Distinguished Chair of Surgery, has received the 2006 Distinguished Service Award from the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons. The award honors contributions to surgical endoscopy and advancing the society’s mission.

Dr. MacFadyen is a member and past president of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons and a member of the Georgia Surgical Society, Southern Surgical Association and Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons. He joined the MCG faculty in 2002.

Dr. Turner lauded

Dr. Saundra TurnerDr. Saundra Turner, chair of the Department of Biobehavioral Nursing, has received the McDuffie County Rotary Club’s 2006 Jean Harris Award.

The award, traditionally awarded to women, is given annually to a non-Rotarian who has made an important impact in the community. Dr. Turner, the first recipient who lives outside McDuffie County, was recognized for her efforts as director of the Good Samaritan House in Dearing, Ga., a partnership of the MCG School of Nursing and Dearing Baptist Church. Nursing faculty and students have provided primary care services in the faith-based center since 2000. The center reported 791 visits in 2005.

Active in community service organizations, Dr. Turner has been a mentor for the Education for Ministry Program at the University of South Carolina since 2000. She is the former board secretary for Planned Parenthood of East Central Georgia. She is a former recipient of the CSRA Nurse of the Year Award, the Spirit of Nursing Award from the 10th District Georgia Nurses Association and the MCG Spirit of Nursing Award.

Ms. Wallace named director

Michele Y. Wallace has been named director of employee health for MCG Health, Inc.

Ms. Wallace previously was chief nursing officer and director of nursing at Wills Memorial Hospital in Washington, Ga. She also has served as an MCG neonatal nurse practitioner and a special projects nurse and clinical nurse supervisor at Hitchcock Healthcare in Aiken, S.C.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Dallas Baptist University, a master’s degree in nursing from the University of New York and a master’s degree in heatlh care administration from Bellevue University in Nebraska. She is a member of the Academy of Neonatal Nursing.
