by Kim Miller

The MCG Chinese Student and Scholar Association will host a 2006 Chinese New Year celebration party on Chinese New Year Eve, Saturday, Jan. 28 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Curtis Baptist Church Activities Center on Broad Street.

All MCG Chinese faculty members, researchers, students and their families are invited to participate in the event, which will include a traditional Chinese dinner and vocal and musical performances.

MCG maintains a large number of international students and researchers from China due to an exchange program between MCG and two Chinese universities, Wuhan University and Sun Yat-Sen University of Medical Sciences. The exchange program began in the fall of 2003.

The Chinese New Year is the most ceremonious holiday among all Chinese holidays, similar to Christmas in the West. Chinese New Year Eve is likewise comparable to Christmas Eve, and is one of the most important family occasions of the year.

Often referred to as the Spring Festival, Chinese New Year is a time to celebrate the earth coming back to life and the arrival of spring. According to the Chinese zodiac calendar, 2006 is the year of the dog.
