MCG netID: Your password to the campus

In an effort to reduce the number of usernames and passwords and to improve network security, Information Technology Support and Services is configuring campus GroupWise e-mail accounts to a common login called the MCG netID.

The goal of the project is for all campus users to have a single username and password to log in to the network for as many electronic resources as possible. With this change you’ll use the same account for GroupWise, Instant Messenger, and the MyMCG portal (https://my.mcg.edu).

Since this is an extensive change affecting all campus users, it is being managed in phases over a five-week period. All campus computer users’ accounts will be configured to the new MCG netID according to how they are grouped on one of the five e-mail post offices. Users will be notified through e-mail one week prior to the password change date. When the process is complete, all users will have the same username and password for GroupWise and the MyMCG portal.

Once your e-mail post office has been re-configured, at your next login to GroupWise, you will use the same password that you are using for the MyMCG Portal. If you cannot log in to the MyMCG portal, contact the Help Desk at ext. 1-4000.

Users will also begin to be prompted to reset their password every 90 days and can do so via any of four mechanisms: 1) GroupWise (Go to Tools, Options, and click the Security icon) 2) GroupWise Web access, https://webaccess.mcg.edu/servlet/webacc (go to Options) 3) a self-service Web site https://mcgnetid.mcg.edu/nps or 4) Novell client.

The Institutional Password Protection Policy requires that passwords must be reset every 90 days, should be a minimum of eight characters long and must include at least one letter and one number. Previous passwords are stored and cannot be reused.

The MCG netID will be the only login users will need to access the MyMCG portal, GroupWise e-mail and instant messenger, Novell File/Print Services (including NetStorage & iFolder) and the VPN client. ITSS will make every effort to use the netID and password for any new applications.

For more information on creating secure passwords, visit www.mcg.edu/itss/Help/security/passwords.htm or contact Becky Rogers, manager of ITSS customer support at ext. 1-3668.
